Barack Obama & Michelle Robinson Obama's Wedding

Since I wrote about the First Daughter Weddings yesterday, I was stumbled upon information on Presidential weddings. So, I figured I would tell the world about our current President’s love story.

Barack Obama met Michelle Robinson in 1989 at a downtown Chicago law firm where Michelle was an attorney. She was assigned to be advisor to a summer associate and you guessed it, the associate was Barack! He asked her out and Michelle refused for an entire month!

Finally agreeing to go on a date with our President, he brought her to the art institute, lunch at an outdoor care and an evening showing of Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” followed by a drink on the 99th floor of the John Hancock floor. Sheesh, what a date! Most people just do dinner and a movie!

They dated for two short years before Barack popped the question in suuuch a romantic way. They were at Gordon’s Restaurant (now called Naha) on Clark Street in Chicago and when dessert was brought over, the ring box was on the plate. Michelle was, of course, in shock!

They married a year later on October 3, 1992 at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. The couple was married by Reverand Jeremiah A. Wright Junior in a traditional Christian ceremony. After the ceremony, the reception was at the South Shore Cultural Center (a formerly all-white, run-down Country Club).

Michelle wore a long sleeve off-the-shoulder white silk dress with a chiffon overlay and a sweetheart neckline (even back then, she had good style!). The dress also had floral applique embellishments and a long train. Her flower of choice was a bouquet of greenery and white roses, very classic. Barack wore the traditional black suite with a matching white rose boutonniere.

Some of the guests were dressed in traditional African dress in keeping with Barack’s Kenyan roots, including his half-brother and best man, Malik Obama (who still lives in Kenya). The wedding song was Stevie Wonder’s “You and I”.

The happy newlyweds left for their honeymoon to California a few days following the wedding. They have been happily married for 16 years. And apparently, Barack Obama is a romantic. Awwww! In the final month of his presidential campaign on Oct 3 2008, he ditched everything (probably to the displeasure of his campaigners) to come home to Michelle with white flowers and dinner reservations for their 16th anniversary.

Enjoy the pictures!
